The owners wished a low budget sustainable house that was comfortable and was versatile in accommodating them as they got older. Their compact 81m2 steel frame colour bond cladded modular home has passive solar design, is well insulated and has double glazing throughout. The living area is warm and light and doesn’t require much heating in winter. The verandah attached to the north extends this living area in cooler months and can be shaded during summer. The owners are aware of and actively manage their water and energy consumption. They have a 1kw grid interactive solar pv system and a composting toilet that saves an estimated 15,000 l per year. The house has also been designed with a creative and effective use of space.
