On World Environment Day, Thursday June 5th, the Mount Alexander Shire Community will celebrate the achievements in reducing the impact of global climate change.
The celebrations run from 3pm to 7.30pm at the Theatre Royal, Castlemaine, with free afternoon tea, kids activities and entertainment.
Janet Phillips from Castlemaine 500 at the Castlemaine Community House said
“We want people to come along and help us celebrate the creativity and enthusiasm that our community has for our environment. This is an incredible day with 7 organisations, schools, businesses and the Council all coming together to showcase and celebrate what is going on across the Shire. It shows that a community together can change the world”
There will be presentations, displays and activities beginning with Afternoon Tea at 3pm. The celebrations will showcase the work of Castlemaine 500; the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group (MASG), Friends of the Box Ironbark Forests (FOBIF), Mount Alexander Shire Community Action Network (MAS-CAN), the Norman Wettenhall Foundation (Connecting to Country), Landcare, and the Mount Alexander Shire Council.
In the evening MASG is hosting the LOCO2 Business Awards sponsored by the Dept. Of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts which includes the Mayoral Award for Innovation and Excellence in Energy Management. The Mount Alexander Shire will also be launching its Greenhouse Action Plan for public comment
Jane Knight, the Low CO2 project officer from MASG said “It is wonderful to be highlighting all the work that local businesses and organisations have been doing to tackle climate change. I encourage all the residents of the shire to look out for the award winners and support local businesses, who are leading the way.”
The Mount Alexander region is achieving national recognition for its leadership in tackling climate change, picking up two nominations in the United Nations Association of Australia ‘World Environment Day Awards 2008’ The Mount Alexander Shire Community a finalist in the Community Award category and the Mount Alexander Shire Council a finalist in the Local Governments category.
